Immigration and Citizenship Law in Turkey: Comprehensive Overview
Summary: How to obtain Turkish Citizenship? Residence Permit types (Short-term, Family, Student). Deportation defense and administrative detention.
Turkey: A Hub for Migration
Turkey is a major destination for investors, students, and retirees. The legal framework is governed mainly by the Law on Foreigners and International Protection (YUKK No. 6458).
1. Residence Permits (İkamet İzni)
Unless you have a visa exemption, you need a residence permit to stay longer than 90 days.
- Short-Term Permit: Usually for tourism or property owners. (Tourism permits are harder to get as of 2026).
- Family Residence Permit: For foreign spouses of Turkish citizens.
- Student Permit: For university students.
- Long-Term Permit: For those who have stayed legally for 8 years continuously.
2. Work Permits (Çalışma İzni)
A residence permit does NOT accept you to work. You need a separate Work Permit from the Ministry of Labor.
- Employer Application: Usually, the company must apply for you.
- Prohibited Jobs: Foreigners cannot work as Dentists, Pharmacists, Vets, or Security Guards.
3. Turkish Citizenship (Vatandaşlık)
- By Investment: Buying $400,000 worth of property or depositing $500,000 in a bank.
- By Marriage: Married to a Turk for 3 years + Living together.
- General Naturalization: 5 years of residence + Language skill + Job.
4. Deportation (Sınır Dışı)
If you violate visa rules or work illegally, a Deportation Decision is issued.
- Administrative Detention: You might be held in a Removal Center (GGM).
- Defense: You have 7 Days to file a lawsuit against deportation. This stops the deportation immediately (Stay of Execution).
