Disability Retirement Conditions and Disease List ( 2026)

Those who lose their working power as a result of illness or accident occurring after starting working life can benefit from “Disability Retirement” right. This right is the most important way of early retirement but its conditions are quite heavy.

1. Conditions to Be Considered Disabled

There are 3 basic conditions for an insured to be considered disabled:

1. Workforce Loss: It must be determined by the Institution Health Board that working power or earning power in profession is lost by at least 60%.
2. Insurance Period: There must be at least 10 years of insurance period. (This 10 year condition is not sought in severe disability requiring care of another).
3. Premium Day Number: At least 1800 days of premium must have been paid.

2. Do Not Confuse with “Disabled Retirement”!

This is the most common mistake.

• Disability Retirement (Malulen): Illness must have appeared AFTER starting work. (If you were already ill when entering work, you cannot retire as malulen).
• Disabled (Tax Deduction) Retirement: Those who were disabled when entering work or received 40-59% report later benefit. Conditions are different (e.g. 15 years 3600 days).

3. Which Diseases Are Covered?

The disease list determined by SGK is wide. Examples:

• Cancer: Considered disabled for 12-24 months from diagnosis (depending on type).
• Organ Transplants: Kidney, Liver, Heart, Lung transplants.
• Neurological: Paralysis (Hemiplegia), Severe Epilepsy, Parkinson’s.
• Psychiatric: Treatment-resistant Schizophrenia, Bipolar disorder.

4. Application Process

1. Petition is submitted to the affiliated SGK directorate.
2. SGK refers you to State Hospital Health Board. (Reports you get yourself are invalid, referral is mandatory).
3. Hospital does not give the report, sends it to SGK in closed envelope.
4. SGK Health Board examines the report and decides “Disabled” or “Not”. Objection can be made to the decision (High Health Board).
